PepperwoodLaguna Fish Survey & Food Web Pilot Study

We surveyed the fish communities, invertebrate and algal composition and related water quality at three sites in the Laguna on August 16 and 17. Our volunteer partners are UC Davis graduate student Teejay O'Rear, SSU graduate student Nicole Karres, and the Community Clean Water Institute. We worked a total of 22 hours with a very dedicated group of volunteers and interns, collecting a variety of samples filling several coolers. Samples will be stored and analyzed at UC Davis (fish) and SSU (plankton & invertebrates). We should have the final data in a few months with the help of another group of student volunteers and interns. The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has agreed to fund this pilot study, since it will contribute valuable information to the TMDL process and will show us how complex the aquatic food web is and whether there is potential for active restoration to improve current conditions. One thing is certain: the carp like the Laguna and were jumping for joy all week-end!
